New Chip Cards Coming Soon
Your Gorham Savings Bank debit card will soon come with an embedded chip, providing you with enhanced security when paying in a store or using at an ATM. Now you can shop with peace of mind knowing that the embedded chip encrypts information to increase data security when paying through chip-enabled terminals. This chip technology protects your information by generating a one-time code whenever you use your card at a chip-enabled terminal.
Chip card transactions offer you advanced security in-store and at the ATM by making every transaction unique. And, your chip card is more difficult to counterfeit or copy. If the card data and the one-time code are stolen, the information cannot be used to create counterfeit cards and commit fraud.
Data Security is the Driving Factor Behind This Technology
Chip cards now offer you an enhanced level of security when you pay in store or use it at an ATM by generating a one-time code each time you use your card at a chip-enabled terminal. Your purchase can only be approved with the chip-generated code.
Plus, your card has both a chip and a magnetic stripe to accommodate any situation, so you can use it practically anywhere.
Using your new chip card is easy.
Chip-enabled terminals have all of the features you are used to, with the addition of a slot to insert your card. The slot is typically located at the bottom or top of the payment terminal.
Depending on the type of terminal, your experience may differ slightly:
- Insert and remove your card with the chip end first, facing up. This tells a chip-enabled terminal whether or not you have a chip card. Then follow the simple prompts.
- If the terminal is chip-enabled, it will prompt you to insert the card again and leave it inserted until the transaction is complete. Remove your card only when prompted by the terminal.
- Once the terminal indicates the transaction is complete, remember to take your card.
- If there isn’t a chip-enabled terminal, use the card the traditional way and swipe.
