Online Banking Security
Protect yourself when banking online with these tips.
Get Serious About Passwords
- Make your passwords long, strong and complex. That means at least eight characters, mixed with uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using common words, phrases or personal information.
- Use different passwords for all of your accounts so if hackers compromise one account, they can’t access any other accounts.
- Consider a password manager. Most people have trouble keeping track of their passwords.
- Consider storing your passwords and security questions in a reputable password manager – an easy-to-access application that stores all your password information. Use a strong password to secure the information in your password manager.
Safeguard Your Information
- Protect your financial information. Don’t access your online account using an unsecured public Wi-Fi. When using wireless hotspots, send information only to sites that are fully encrypted.
- Navigate to Online Banking from the bank’s website. Links are easy to spoof, especially if they are in an email or text message.
- Don’t stay permanently signed in to accounts. When you’re finished, log out of Online Banking.
- Close other browser windows. Access Online Banking with only one browser open.
Monitor Accounts
- Review account transactions. The best way to protect yourself from fraud is to monitor your account. Review your transactions regularly – the sooner you identify a problem, the sooner you can protect yourself.
- Utilize alerts. There are several alerts available in Online Banking. Balance and transaction alerts can be established to help monitor your account.
- Mobile banking is another helpful tool to monitor your accounts, especially on the go.
Keep Devices Updated
- Keep anti-virus and firewall software in place. It can be annoying when your computer stops to download new virus protections, but it’s important. Before purchasing any software, consider solutions offered by your operating system. Microsoft has some free protection programs for Windows. Apple has some as well. The bottom line is you should be protected.
- Set your protection levels at medium or higher. Most operating systems have built in security levels, but you may be able to increase the default blocking level for added defense against threats.
- Lock down your Wi-Fi. If you have a home Wi-Fi, protections should be in place so it’s not open to the public. Changing the factory password is recommended for additional security.
Consumer Protection Laws
Regulation E protects consumers with many types of electronic transactions, if fraud is identified early. Monitor your account regularly and notify the bank promptly of any suspicious activity.
